tinnitus
By Andrew Fuller
What is tinnitus? For me tinnitus is a ringing noise which i have had on and off for around 20 years. I say on and off because some days are worse than others, some days i don't even know i suffer from it and everything is normal, others are so bad you just want to shake your head off and bang the side of your head, and once it starts, it seems to go on forever. Others may suffer different types of noises such as swishing, almost like listening to the waves at sea crashing, and other types of noises but usually a high pitch noise. Tinnitus for arose when i suffered a head injury and causing some ear damage with it, but ear infection or disease can cause it, age can contribute to tinnitus, but some damage to the inner ear is most common which affects the hearing nerve endings. Nowadays tinnitus can be evaluated to pinpoint the near and sometimes exact cause to which part of the ear or brain it is that is at fault, when i started with it it was just a matter of fact and just put up with it, if there were any tests 20 years ago, i did not know about them nor offered any. Although there may not be any treatment to stop it permanantly, Tinnitus can go on it's own, or sadly may be stuck with it, luckily mine does come and go but you learn to live and cope with it and once you do learn how to, you tend to ignore it when it's just a minor irritant. It has been suggested that also nowadays when you do suspect tinnitus to see your doctor as tumors can be cause of tinnitus, this is very rare but a just in case situation, so don't panic.! Briefly one more cause for tinnitus which is becomeing a more poular cause of it is turning up your MP3's and such like, so turn them down and look after your hearing, also at work in noisy places, indusrial places wear ear protectors in these ares or working with noisy machinary. It really is a pian when you get it and it will drive you wild until you get used to it and learn to cope with it, so prevent it if you can and if it comes, let it happen on it's own without any help from you. Protect after your ears.

Tinnitus is another affliction that is not really treated as the serious problem that it can be. Probably the main reason for this is that it is seldom accompanied by pain. As well as being debilitating, tinnitus can lead to random mood changes, withdrawal and depression. Whatever the cause, tinnitus does not respond well to many medications although white noise played through ear-phones can ease the distress even if it doesn't make hearing any easier. Twenty years is a long time to put up with something especially as. like many other disabilities, you can never really become accustomed to it because it is not constant. I am very pleased that, so far, it is not a problem I have not been plagued by.
Thank you for sharing this story, Andrew. I have a ringing in my ears that according to the doctor is caused by using power tools. This showed up about 3 years ago and there is no cure. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
